“I can see the change in him, and it does my heart good.”
—William Hill, Chris’ Father
When Chris Klein found MRC in July, 2012, his experience making music was only yet to begin. Attending Academy of World Languages down the street, he’s made a routine of coming to the studio after school to learn digital music production. “The first thing I learned how to do was make beats,” Chris says of his start at MRC.
Jump ahead just a year later, and Chris can be found churning out his original music in the studio: laying down piano, drum, or guitar parts; recording himself singing or rapping, or working with MRC instructors to perfect his compositions on the computer.
Chris’ wide range of new skills could be lent to what many call “raw talent”, but it might be better chalked up to his personality. “Chris always carried a smile that I always knew would take him a long way,” says his father, William. He brings to the studio a lively and upbeat character, with an eagerness to learn and involve himself with just about anything going on. Whether playing games in the lobby with teens, helping musicians with recording sessions, or introducing himself to new members to make them feel welcome: Chris positively contributes to the MRC community on a daily basis.
Chris’ enthusiasm and open mind have led him to take regular guitar, piano, and drum lessons since he’s been at MRC. Add to that plenty of studio time to learn songwriting, production and editing, and you’ll quickly see the dedication behind Chris’ music today. This year alone, he’s spent just over 200 hours at MRC’s studios—and counting. Says his father, “Chris is doing a great job with his music. He’s grown from the time that he a started back in 2012 through this year. ”
Play His Music!
When he’s not at MRC, Chris can be found singing in school youth choir, partaking in summer swim leagues, or engaging himself in the community at his church. For him, music is a way to share what’s meaningful in his life. The lyrics in Chris’ raps express his feelings about his faith, his family, and how they both continually shape him in all walks of life. His music also often makes a statement, calling upon his peers and adults to address violence and crime in the community.
Chris’ involvement at MRC shows how music can be a connector. When he’s not working on his own music, Chris can be found jamming with other members, helping with their own recording projects, or shadowing staff instructors in the studio to pick up new tricks.
Outside of the studios, Chris’ music helps connect himself with his family. “It’s a tremendous feeling when we sit down and listen to his music at home,” says Chris’ father. “I can see the change in him, and it does my heart good. It’s a positive thing for me that he is able to do this. I enjoy him sharing it with me as his father.”
Chris’ accomplishments are living proof of what’s possible for any student that makes use of the opportunities here. Not only is he dedicated to his music and values; Chris seems to bring out the fun, joy, and excitement in just about any moment at the studio. His growth, passion, and positivity are an example and a gift for all of us at MRC.
