Engage

Our belief is that music is unique in that it has the power to unite diverse groups of people and is a disciplined and immediate gateway to emotional awareness. Teens who participate regularly in music not only hone their abilities to focus, think, organize, and work with others but begin to master their own, often challenging, emotional lives. Students at MRC can benefit greatly even from the simple presence of another adult.

Whether or not you are a musician, there are many aspects of our program that rely on the efforts of volunteers. If you are musically inclined, even better!

For musicians looking to volunteer, we often have a need for private lesson instructors. We also accept equipment and monetary donations in order to help support our programs and students.

Volunteer Opportunities

Music Instructor

Volunteer Music Instructors generally donate their time one day a week, for at least 2-4 hours. Hours we are open to our members are 2-7 PM, Mon-Thurs (12-6 PM in the Summer). Students meet with a teacher for 30 minute, weekly private lessons. Each student may be from a completely different walk of life, with different musical interests, goals, and skill levels. Teachers excel at MRC by meeting each individual where he or she is and being open to creating a fun and educational learning experience for teens that makes them want to come back.

Tutors

Many of our students come to MRC and do their homework and study before they get in the studio and start creating dope music. Our staff is often asked for help with math, science, language, history, projects, tests, and homework that we aren’t equipped to provide. Are you interested in donating an hour or two a week to help our students become better students? Or, do you know someone that might be interested? If so, please contact our program coordinator

Other Positions

There can be plenty of things for a volunteer to do with MRC other than music instruction. We often have a need for additional help with things like promotion, marketing, design, etc. that require professional experience, but give interested individuals without music experience a chance to help out. For those with less niche experience than the areas mentioned above, we also have the need occasionally arise for friends and volunteers that can attend events to support and promote MRC.

If interested in volunteering, contact Nick Burke – nburke@myy.org

Equipment Donations

Despite our limited budget, we want to give our youth the most fulfilling music experience possible. As such, we are occasionally in need of instruments, amplifiers, or other music and recording equipment that could be put to very good use at the MRC.

From instruments & accessories to studio equipment… If you have something to contribute to our efforts, your donation may be tax deductible.

However, for more obscure or large items like pianos, we have to consider space constraints versus usability. While we greatly appreciate the offer of something as valuable as an upright or grand piano, each of our recording and practice rooms is currently outfitted with one and we no longer have space for another. When it comes to recording equipment, any donation we take needs to easily interface with and complement the equipment our members are already learning on and used to working with to be able to be put to good use. (i.e. Quality microphones, preamps, compressors, XLR or instrument cables, or USB/firewire interfaces can be put to immediate good use. Things like digital outboard effects racks, hardware synths with libraries on floppy disk, etc. are a little more difficult to put to good use when working with teens)
